Monday Update

Hard to understand what HSUS is doing. Some of their actions do not support what they say their mission is - which is to be here for the long term. Previously I said go to Gonzales. But at this point just call me until I get clarification on whether or not they will accept volunteers: 443.421.0000.

Unlike almost any other group, we worked right up until Rita came at us full force. We got in almost a full day of work - working up until 6pm with very little rain and wind. We actually had a great day that day and put in almost nine hours. It wasn’t that difficult to talk to the police dept and other officials to find out when we should get out. We were all safe and secure. Went to Gonzales to try to sleep there. They now have a password to get in. A girl at the shell station gave it to us so we could get into the gate. We were quickly told that we couldn’t stay in Gonzales and what came along with those statements was despicable behavior; we were told we would be arrested if we rescued another animal. And some lady, like a rabid animal, was ripping animal rescues signs from our cars in 70 miles wind. I had one little dog whose owner I had located. They were trying to take that dog. There was no way I was giving that dog to the flawed tracking system that they have put together. These people have made enemies out of the hundreds people who put their lives on hold and spent thousands of their own money to help reunite pets with their owners and save other lost animals.

Here’s a fact, I have tried desperately to follow HSUS directions to a tee - to be official with their rules. The rules change every day; so in the end, it’s almost impossible to be a rescuer with HSUS. Jane Garrison, a person of good intellect, responsible, street savvy who uses common sense, is the only person that I have run across that will help you. But in many cases, her hands have been tied. I can see it.

I sent 4 volunteers to go to the 6 am meeting. Just as it says to do on Jane’s voicemail. They got in the night before but they were harassed and treated rudely. Luckily they got to Jane and she hooked them up and got them in the field to help with rescue efforts.

RUMOR HAS IT (I state rumor anytime I have totally accurate info) that HSUS is looking to wind down the Gonzales operation. I predicted that they would use this hurricane Rita to move out lots of volunteers and then wind down. They can dispute that right here with a comment or they can call me. They can prove me wrong in 30 seconds or give me a press release to post. I know that they read this bog.

HSUS has taken on a strategy that we feel will allow thousands of animals to starve in their house. Unless things change, they will now only take critical animals. Other animals in the thousands have been fed in their houses. Now HSUS premise is that those owners will soon be home and that there will be a big fat happy reunion. It seems that in their fairy tale world all these animals are in Victorian houses and the owners will be riding in in any day in their Lexuses to get their pets. The reality is that in almost every house that we are dealing with an animal inside is that the likelihood of the owner of ever coming back is very low. These people left without vehicles, think their pets are dead, and have been moved to new locations. With new accommodations and jobs, they may never return. If I leave an animal in a house there are major problems:

1. I have to be assured that HSUS will continue to feed that animal for months to come. I have absolutely no confidence that that will happen OR
2. I have to be completely sure that that owner is actually coming home. My personal opinion in many houses that they are not coming homes. These houses are disgusting. You seen mold all over the walls, dry wall wet and falling in. 3 weeks of feces, urine on the floor. So this policy of feeding these animals and this situation and expecting the owners seems a little far fetched. These animals must be pulled out but they aren’t.

I’d like HSUS to explain their tracking system. It seems that no one there has heard of an electronic database - something that every 8th grader has been taught. I have sent 5 owners to Gonzales - all have come back saying that they are simply told “You can start walking around looking for your pet.” Could HSUS please describe in detail their tracking system? And don’t say petfinder - that’s just their way of acting like they have a plan for these animals. In a concise document, explain the tracking system for the owner who wants to search for their pet. I know owners who know their animals were sent there but after days of trying have no idea even which state their pet was sent to. Seems like everything was done on paper; I hope I am wrong

HSUS you need to absolutely tell the truth because there are too many people there who saw the inner workings and are ready to tell exactly what they saw - good or bad. Honesty in the best policy. Animals were pulled from specific addresses. Why is it when people try to find their pet that they can’t simply say “My animal was pulled from xyz address” and in some database, this info is quickly pulled telling exactly where the animal is at this time. As far as I can tell neither petfinder.com nor HSUS has a way to search by specific address. Both need to remedy this immediately. Especially petfinder.com who has been pushed as the place to go to find their pet. You simply cannot expect people to click on New Orleans and click on 10,000 entries to find their pet.

Next, can we get a complete anthology of what happened and what is being done about the list of owners who called the 800 number. This is your chance to tell the truth about that list because I have specific people at HSUS who have volunteered who know day by day the status of the list, what happened to it, and why it wasn’t used. And we are putting together a timeline of the list, which is not going to make HSUS look like the shining savoir of those owner call ins. We have been in houses where the owners were told that their animals were rescued by HSUS but when we got there the animals were dead, dying or perhaps in good shape depending on the amount of food left out.

Next, I have a group ready to run a ½ to full page USAToday ad to alert the thousands of pet owners who called that 800 HSUS number that their pets have not been rescued and that they should take other measures to rescue their pets. I’ll give HSUS the courtesy of today to contact me before we place that ad. I don’t talk to lawyers. There has got to be someone with some common sense there at HSUS that is interested in a serious conversation about how to continue this operation in order to save the thousands of animals that are still out there. Anybody who has been on the street understands that this crisis hasn’t even slowed down. I was in St. Bernard parish yesterday and there were 20-30 dogs and cats every 3 to 5 blocks. What happened to the idea to get a couple of water trucks in there to water these animals in kiddy pools? Most of these animals were obviously people’s pets and not strays.

Hey HSUS! I met a guy yesterday who came by your facility and no one wanted to listen to him. He has 20 acres plus the biggest rodeo pen and stables just a few miles from Gonzales. Don’t cry about space. Anyone with a brain could get space here. I have been in 3 locations and have never been turned down once. Doug's number is 985.513.0287. Call him.

Lastly could every one please go to www.oilydog.org and please find this poor dog so everyone can know he’s ok.

Eric-
Can you please tell me whether you have found the two dogs at Iberia and Murat? I was part of a feed and water group with the HSUS on Thursday when I found these two dogs. One a small terrier and the other is a larger collie mix. They are so skinny, blistered, and not in good shape. I was told by someone at Gonzales that I would NOT be permitted to enter with these dogs so I left them tons of food, but they need out. I gave this info to your partner Billy. PLEASE let me know they are ok. It has been haunting me ever since. They are so sweet and scared, and it makes me so angry that we were turned away. Email me with any news, please!!!!!

Go Eric Go!!! How many pets have they saved (lets not really count the 1000 chickens - nothing against chickens - but that was one mass rescue) for the 10 - 15 million? FEMA's inadaquacies pale in comparison. At first they were patting themselves on the back for 50 - 60 pets a day and discouraging people from volunteering. 50,000 pets @ 60/day? More questionable math! Much as I generally dislike litigation, perhaps a class action fraud suit is in order!

We need to find a way to get rid of HSUS having any authority over animal rescue. They turned help away.

Many thanks to the groups that have saved many - Best Friends, Pasados, Eric's group, Noah's Wish, and smaller rescue groups doing what they could. I will be sending a donation to help Eric's group.

I have started a blog today, part of which is to try to educate the public about HSUS. They gave people an email address and phone number where people could report their pets left behind. As far as I can tell, they did NOTHING with this list.

in my opinion the hsus needs to be shut down . it is so political and their priorities are not there. mabie money has alot to do with it . do you know that the humane society gave $50,000 to lsu to vet dept? could that money not have gone to better things? i do not trust them. they want to put the animals to sleep more than find them homes. could it be that someone is dipping? and its alot easier to put them to sleep than to find homes. also they have bogged thmselves down with red tape much like the government.there are some good loca humane societies and some who do not really care about animals. oh, they consider them a nusance and they are just there to keep them off the streets. that is why i will not not not give to the humaine soc. i will give to individual groups who i have done research on . you can tell who is really doing a good job.. and also if the hsus is all that why dont they do more and spend that money on spay/nuter programs and prevention? god bless you eric for doing the work you do . all of yall are angles!!! j w

Good job. Lets all attack and shut down this HSUS. Who needs an organization that cares about animals anyway. There are way too many and some have to go. And since we have currently nothing else to do this is also the right time to get this started.

Did you ask Petfinder.com for their list of owner requested rescues? If not, why not? If you did ask them, did they give you their list?

At 4:18 PM, Blogger Senihele said...

Let me know how to donate and I'll help pay for that add. I would hope the owners of pets who have NOT been rescued as promised would file a class action lawsuit against HSUS unless they take immediate action. Yours are not the only stories coming out of there that are discouraging for those of us who want to see these animals rescued.

Who is HSUS to say someone will be arrested? What authority do they have?

And yes, the database is a joke but don't dare mention that in the petfinder forums. People are being BANNED from the forum for daring to post other databases or suggesting that pictures posted on other websites are superior to petfinder's. I know of three, including myself, that were banned for stating we felt other forums were important.

Petfinder is unwielding and cumbersome. They appear to have no desire to upgrade their program to allow for more efficient searching AND many dogs have been mislabeled or identified. What might be listed as beagle might be something else.

It seems it's all about the money. Corporate sponsors and rescue money. I will never give another red cent to HSUS.

First of all, I want to point out that the LA SPCA evacuated all their animals days before the storm and has been working non-stop in spite of their headquarters and equipment being underwater. So many of the outside groups have arrived with PR people, done stories, solicited funds and yet it is the LA SPCA that will be on the ground long after they are gone. They have had a HUGE problem with these groups coming in, taking animals and leaving no record of whose animals they have or where they are keeping them. They also have a number of issues with volunteers who went out to specific locations to rescue animals but left certain breeds (pit mixes, etc) behind to die. These were the actions of well-meaning volunteers, some claiming to be working with the LA SPCA. But with only a handful of staff, the LA SPCA is obviously overwhelmed.

Obviously none of these groups mean to do anyone real harm. I'm not sure that there is an efficient way for 50,000 animals to be rescued and sheltered and reunited with their owners. There are bound to be failures along the way. But...it is not just those outside groups that deserve support.

Eric,

Thanks so much for all your hard work, and willingness to stand up for the animals and what you think is right. I agree that rescuing 50,000 animals in a war zone is a virtually impossible job that cannot be done perfectly. But I also agree that HSUS needs to explain publicly now what happened to the list of owner call-ins, because people who called that number expected their pets to be rescued.

Another poster mentioned that some rescuers left certain breeds (i.e., pitbulls) behind to die. I find that statement curious because it appears to me that about 50 percent of all the animals rescued have been pit bulls. Half the photos and stories posted by all the rescue groups seems to concern pits. Obviously there was a lot of dog fighting and breeding of these dogs going on the N.O. area. Eric, can you comment on the proportion of rescues that have been pit bulls, and any controversy surrounding this?

At 5:06 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

There is a comment in another forum claiming that HSUS and its approved rescuers have been working all along from their owner call-in list, but they don't want to give it to outside groups because of the potential for looting etc. Even if this is true, they obviously don't have anywhere near enough rescuers to handle all 20,000 calls or whatever the number is, EVER, let alone before all the animals die. Given that situation, it is inexcusable for them to refuse to share the list with rescuers like Eric who have been on-site saving animals since the beginning. Moreover, HSUS should have been announcing publicly for weeks that they are overwhelmed with calls and owners need to check on their own pets to be sure.

Is the US military assisting in rescuing companion animals in NOLA yet?

I heard Brian Williams on the NBC national news say that the military has rescued 400 head of cattle so far. I don't want the cattle to die obviously, but I don't think ranchers' bank accounts should be more important than the hearts of animal owners.

Eric, I have been reposting everywhere. I was down there volunteering. Please, include in your statements the fact that the HSUS chose to hire the LA Staffing company with people that "don't like animals" instead of helping the great many volunteers stay longer with that same money. RIDICULOUS! I saw first hand the CHAOS created by the HSUS and ASPCA. Keep on keeping on, the Universe is on YOUR side.

Who is wasting their money now?

You disgust me -pretneding to be about animals when you are on your own ego trip and taking people's money for your gratification.

How many animals could be saved with $123,000?

I'm ashamed to have donated to your shelter.

After seeing the mess that petfinder calls its found pets list I was appalled at the glaring errors - no-one could possibly find anything. I offered my services several times(10 years experience operating dog boarding kennel I know my breeds) No acknowledgement, no reply. From what I observed (adult pekinese listed as rottweiler puppy, for pete's sake. not to mention the zebras that were actually horses -poodle cross or possible bichon listed as powderpuff crested) If they cant figure out the breeds I said - list them by color, you cant screw that up too badly. How hard could it be to take a permanent marker and write information such as the finding location in the dogs collar, even with all the shuffling around the info would stay with the animals. Are they hiring fema rejects? What an embarassment, if it wasn't such a huge tragedy it mght be laughable.
Keep your spirits up Eric, you are fighting the good fight. The rest of these folks have to live with their consciences and the results of their actions (or inaction as the case may be). If I can do anything from across the country (data entry, phone calls, e-mails)e-mail me at carpe_d_m@msn.com I'd love to help.

The nola.com people are a bunch of fruitcakes who have truly gone over to the dark, hysterical side.

Homeless and nolarescue tell it like it really is, and yet the hysterical people at nola.com, many of whom have never stepped foot in the Gulf region, go off on their own half-baked stupid crusades.

Meantime they are diverting money and rescuers from real places of need, all because of their own egos. They all stand around and pat each other on the back and try to badmouth those who just won't deal with their brand of unreality any more.

How was that steak, Eric?

Eric,

Ashleigh Fox is telling everyone (verbally and in writing on the NOLA Pet Rescue board) that you are basically stealing from good-hearted people. This is a serious legal issue that needs to be taken seriously. If she is slandering you, she will be held accountable. If she is whistle-blowing then you need to explain your actions to a lot of people who are beginning to feel they have been "defrauded by deception".

This is now not simply "bickering"; this is now a situation which is indeed punishable by law. On the other hand, if Ashleigh Fox has been defrauding people by deception (fabricating personal tragedies which the purpose of monetary gain)she will stand before the law. Whichever the case, you and she need to consult with an attorney, ASAP.

People, Eric has been down there rescuing & organizing rescues for several weeks. Many on the Nola forum can attest to his heroic efforts, and dozens and dozens of volunteers can do the same, as well as the Winn Dixie group. The ugly accusations & gossip are accomplishing nothing, and only serve as a distraction the people who are still racing to save animals. If you want to vent - write the State Vet, Dr. Maxwell Lea at mlea@ldaf.state.la.us Dr. Lea is now threatening to END animal rescue efforts on Sept 30th. It's the State Vet that's been a real boondoggle to the entire rescue mission. SO PLEASE, email him and beg him to allow rescues to continue. Yesterday, Pasados rescued 60 animals from empty homes, some near death. see www.pasadosafehaven.org SO PLEASE, let's not attack anyone. Just because Eric was handling logistics & phonecalls doesn't mean his rescue group wasn't working diligently. I am very disappointed that folks would take the word of 1 person, Ashleigh (Homeless on the Nola forum) who has solicited donations for her own rescue efforts. Eric never asked anyone for a dime - the Nola forum & others organized a donation drive on his behalf, without his knowledge. PLEASE PEOPLE, don't rush to judgement, and don't jump to conclusions based on 1 person's account when so many others have had a completely DIFFERENT, completely POSITIVE experience. Thank you

I live in Baton Rouge. If this is a scam, it will eventually come to light. My gut feeling is that Ashleigh is jealous of the money Eric is receiving from donors and she is making it personal by trying to discredit Eric. I believe one of her email addys is girlindebt@.com - that's a red flag.

To clarify some facts. Ash lives at the Sherwood Acres apartments on Coursey. She is also a paramedic and an LSU student but has had to quit going to college in order to rescue pets. Her Uncle is in a coma and her entire family is extremely poor and homeless. Her entire family can't even come up with enough money to bury her aunt. She and her partner, Kim are living on donations. The apartment manager is letting her stay there but she needs all the money we can send so she can start paying rent again. Eric has gotten alot of money and Homeless22 needs some of that money. Eric should share. Ash can't find a job as a paramedic in Louisiana. Kim can't find a job either. Ash and Kim would never come right out and ask for your money so I am doing it on my own.

At 12:46 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

All of this controversy began with the "AD" idea. A lot of work is done at Lamar Dixon and down in NOLA but there is also a lot of "talk time". Venting has become rampant and it's just human nature to gossip. When Eric wanted to run an ad, all you-know-what broke loose. The talk was if he used that much money for an ad he would be denying many pets the relief those funds could buy. Next idea was (from some people who have been rescuing) that "we" needed to re-direct the generousity of so many from this forum who have sent or will send donations to Eric. Therefore "we" must appear to be more in-need by tugging at the hearts of the generous forum people by posting our personal tragedies and if we don't have those tragedies it would still serve a greater good to make some up. In other words GREED has reared it's ugly head but that is natural and inevitable when so much money is available and flowing from people who have good hearts and intentions and those are the people being taken advantage of.

I have been at Lamar Dixon I have been out quite a bit of money but virtue is it's own reward and I would not accept a dime of your hard-earned money. Your role in this tragedy and in this forum is for emotional support and communication; you should not pay my gas expenses nor should you buy my dinner. I am not a charity and I volunteer up to the point that it is not counterproductive to my or my family's economic stability. The problem has arisen because of people who were already on the edge of financial ruin deciding to rescue pets and let other people rescue them financially. Think before you enable this. Don't believe that only one or two people who either lurk or post frequently in this forum are doing so much more than all the rest. The rest are doing it; they are just NOT asking you to support them for doing what they are doing. I am wiped out but I will be back , Thursday - a cool day is anticipated and I will be refreshed. I would think others who have gotten themselves caught up in this jealousy of who is receiving more money than whom might take a couple of days off and reflect on how deep they are making this for themselves.

Lot of misscommunication and paranoi here. An ad would be paid for by someone with a lot of money and I don't want to say his name.

Ashley seems like an ok person. Talked to her today...she kinda apologized. Share what money folks?...I am at least 7-10k into my own pocket...never once went on any site asking for money...asked for spotlighjts only meaning to find a store where they had them...so I COULD GO BUY THEM WITH MY MONEY WHICH I DID. Folks my phone bill alone is going to be 2k. My friends sent me around 2k and others another 2k. gave that money to HSSM. Think about that scene in Aviator where he goes before Congress and explains he spent a billion of his own money....and they are trying to railroad him....

NO plan someone said? Hell no I didn't have a plan but I made one and it works...getting to 30-40 houses a day in a very organized way because we sleep a mile from the site instead of heading to Gonzales every night which is a long way away, we find a piece of ground we can hold 15-20 animals on so we don't have to run them 3 at a time all the way to Gonzales and Pasado....I will let you call anyone who has been here with me...this girl shows up for a 1/2 day pissed that I had given out all the call ins already...I don't have time to babysit and she obvioulsy got the impression we collected like 100k ...she asked me where my air conditioned building is, I probably gave her a look like "what planet are you from?" I don't even have air condiotioning in the piece of crap truck I rented and it had been over 100 degrees...somewhere someone got the idea that I have a bunch of money....ha ha I wish....I guess you are here on this site because you care about the animals..so lets stop this nonsense...we can save more of them...VERY IMPORTANT...I HAVE TOLD EVERYONE TO KEEP GOING TO GONZALES, HUNDREDS OF PEOPLE. aT LEAST 10 PEOPLE OUT TODAY OUT OF 80 WERE PEOPLE i SENT. I tell them don't talk to anyone but Jane and you will be in the field same day.....come to Gonzales, get in the field...Nola folks I need you, I get my leads on where people need animals saved...please don't believe all that stuff...it was nuts... I worked 18 hours today and took 178 phone calls and returned 80 messages..many to tell a person that there pet was dead. We just spent an hour on the phone at midnight for a poor girl that is beside herself to get her cats...Eric Rice

Oh my god. I just saw that girls post. She called me today to say it really was not that bad. It is horrible. What is wrong with her. BTW-Some guy gave me $500 not $200 and he came all the way from NY to stay with us for a week. I told him 10 times I didnt need it. He said I was taking it. That is the only cash I ever took from anyone...

Today that money paid for 2 vet visits for very sick animals, food for everyone tonight etc...I don't want it. I am not on an ego trip and I and people here have suffered to get animals saved...Beers? There is a bar in the Rite Aid parking lot...I have never been in it...we had 12 animals yesterday...and remember it was 1 day after we totally left the city and took all animals to gonzales...Sat and watched the animals? anyone wanna see my phone bill? 147 inbound and 96 outbound calls...the people here read this post and my god is everyone pissed...staging area? who ever said I had a mountian of suplies?...totally unneeded...no place to put them...YMCA had at least 200k of wasted supplies...I don't want more supplies than we need...what we are to take time to unload semi trucks of supplies we don't need?...Mrs Ashley has some serious, serious, serious issues...you want references? just call me you will have 50 or more in 10 minutes...people who have been here....out in the field bleeding and sweating....good job Mrs Ash, you accomplished your smear campaign and killed 10 animals in the process.

Her friend Kim who she claims is in on her ploy was here working with us all day and took time to see and learn what we do and how we do it.

Stop acting like I set up some big donation site or something....Spotlights? I paid for them on my credit card. THIS ENTIRE DAY IS THE MOST DISCOURAGING THING I HAVE EVER DEALT WITH but it didn't stop my from working as hard as I can. You people made the blog popular. Not me. I have not had internet for 3 weeks to do anything....

Thanks to the dozens of people who I talk to 10x a day who give me owner call ins...Ashely has no concept of what we are doingg NONE. Not a clue. She wanted to see 100 animals in an air conditioned warehouse eating designer dog and cat food. I have said all along that you can make a difference with virtually no money and a bag of dog and cat food down here....

Eric,

Anyone with half a brain can see that you are doing massive job and you are to be commended. I didn't know Ashleigh's email address was girlindebt......geeze what should that tell someone!

Ashleigh has slandered you out of jealously. She is begging people to send her money. She is still begging for money. Ashleigh is a beggar. You are a hero. She has a welfare mentality and has found a gold mine, for a while. It will end soon and then she will have to find more suckers or another set of tragic circumstances will develope in her mind and she will spend her valuable life dissolving into the narcotic draw of charity. Your life has vast opportunities because of your integrity. Pity her, she is doomed to be a slave of her own pitifulness and greed.

One week ago I returned from N.O. where I was photographing animal rescue by HSUS for a national
news organization. I did cover their massive operation in Gonzales and was supposed to go with their teams into N.O. the next day. As I arrived , so did hurricane Rita and instead of rescueing animals in New Orleans HSUS was evacuating dogs and cats to locations farther inland. Friday morning, as Rita neared the western La Coast, I met Eric Rice who was operating his own independant rescue. I was invited to go along and document their operation. Coordinating volunteers from around the country out of an abandoned YMCA building called "Camp Compassion". I was only out with them for one day but it was enough for me to see how vital their work is. Too many animals of all kinds are either running in packs on the streets or trapped in homes to starve. Time is rapidly running out. As a photographer I got to document their heroic work, as a human being I got to participate in some of the rescues. When Rita came crashing into western La at the end of that day, water was literally washing accross the highway. But we finally made it into Gonzales with a full cargo of rescued pets. Having been to the hurricane zone I can't put into words how tragic this storm was. We can't restore the lives of those lost, human or animal. But we can prevent more loss. I feel lucky to have been able to go with these volunteers for that one day and witiness heroes at work.

Really great blog I've bookmarked it - now some really important bits of financial advice - as it is along the same lines I thought I would share this info with you.

We were paying far too much for items like kids clothes, games consoles, car insurance/home insurance/pet insurance, broadband, mobile phones and utilities/loans, tip on writing business letter etc. Then a friend of mine recommended a site called www.bargainplace.co.uk. We were able to get cheaper electricity, gas, mobile phone, broadband and loan deals at bargainplace. Thanks to my friend (and the site) I am saving something like £100 a month and can afford an extra holiday a year. Booked of course on www.bargainplace.co.uk. Thanks bargainplace ;-) !!

PS - I set up a website a couple of months ago and until recently I was getting no traffic at all. Then, I signed up to Linkreferral.com. Not only did I start getting visitors by the truck load, I also joined Affiliatewindow and am now making lots of money by partnering with companies like Argos, Next, John Lewis, Pixmania, Marks and Spencer, LX Direct, Littlewoods, Vodafone, phones4u, phones2u, Sky, NTL, Virgin Media, Talktalk, Woolworths, Empire Direct, ebay plus online gambling sites - you can make pot loads of cash.

Linkreferral.com is absolutelely free and has really helped my business take off.

PLUS!! there are opportunities to make money from Linkreferral as well - sign up for free and check out the website and email received for details

Follow these free tips and you won't go far wrong - that brand new BMW or Mercedes might just be around the corner!!
