More Updates for Friday!

More Updates for Friday!

In just the last few minutes I have received several dozen calls from authority figures asking how they can help! Its my opinion, though I am not an animal rescue specialist but having watched HSUS over the last few days and I am confident that they are doing an excellent job in many areas, that the following things seem to me to be obvious help for this effort:

1. A major press conference by any government agency saying that they are committed to helping rescue these animals and to giving HSUS and others like them all the help they need
2. That HSUS should be allowed to set up mini staging areas throughout the city with some people being allowed to stay overnight. This is working great here in Gonzales for several reasons
a. the police are continuing to drop off animals that they find since they know we are here,
b. people here start to feed animals first thing in the morning and late at night and taking care of animals in between
c. for the Gonzales area, it took 2 hrs to get here through the city with all the traffic – taking lots of valuable time away from actual animal care

3. People at our staging area could use pallets of animal food, water, and bowls every few blocks in the city. They are spending lots of time hauling food around. But with food close by they could spend that time finding and feeding the animals more quickly. Anything to move them faster and more efficiently. A tarp could easily be thrown over the pallets protecting them from any rain and weather (I’ve heard a rumor that Petco had offered to bring these pallets in like this but who knows .)

a. And where we are located, the property owners that are trickling into the city (no matter what they aren’t being stopped) have already pointed out two more animals that we didn’t know about.

b. This morning I listened in on the HSUS meeting where they gave lots of positive news on the feeding program. Lee and folks have been doing this from day one but they are exhausted and an expanded program would help.

These mini staging areas would help a lot and save lots of time and resources

Good news!

You should know that I just got off the phone with John Minnick from the Department of Homeland Security, a nice guy, who promised help was on the way. They have been looking at this issue for almost two weeks and that they are committed to it!

These are just a few ideas. Any additional comments, suggestions are welcome!

By the way, does anyone know if setting up 100 animals crates in the last few hours makes me an animal specialist?

The work continues.

Thanks for everything, Eric. Your update is enormously helpful for people like me who sit, helpless and anguished, hundreds of miles away. All we can do is write checks and harass government officials when what we really want is to be down there with you guys.

It's amazing - despite colossal bureaucratic apathy and ineptitude, people like you are working miracles.

To everyone who is working to save the animals: I hope that your compassion and generosity of spirit come back to you a hundredfold.

Eric, is there a way to convey money to you folks to help you, for us not in the area who can't get you items you need?

Your feeding program is some of the best news I've had in 2 weeks--it makes so much sense, allows so many more animals to live given the resources available. Simple and brilliant.

Please say how we can send money or Walmart cards or pizza deliveries or whatever.

Sounds a bit anxious as to what to expect of course. THANK YOU ERIC, THANK YOU! WHY weren't you in charge of this whole thing when it started, would probably have saved the lives of thousands of the furry kids. Let us know what we can do to help - we're here! The IFAW website has a form on which supplies (mostly donated by Petco) can be requested by rescuers and shelters.

Just a question. This is in NO way critical.

I read earlier of a Rotweiler guarding a feeding station that was killing smaller dogs that were coming to eat.

Some of these were owned dogs with tags.

Is there a way to set up the feeding stations to prevent this?

Or a way to pull the aggressive dogs near the feeding stations and confine them?

Eric,

I like so many others were discouraged to come by the SPCA, and were left feeling helpless everytime we saw the plight of the animals on TV. I wish now I had come anyway. As word of your help is getting out, it seems now that the offers of help are starting to pour in and things may be falling into place. I am debating whether to head that way or not. I am in Alaska, and was going to fly to the west coast, pick up a truck, buy a small travel trailer, and head your way. It could take me up to a week to be there. If you have time to respond, I am wondering by then, if you think you will have the help that you need. I will be on my way if you think you still will be lacking help. I'm so glad you pressed on! You are our hero!!!

People may have noticed there are no recent updates to this Blog.
Eric's group is overwelmed and begging for volunteers.
See NOLA post below from someone who spoke to him Sunday midday.
If you are thinking of volunteering, don't wait for the OK from Eric. His phone mailbox is full.
Post on NOLA for latest info on where to go, how to get in, and someone is sure to help you accomplish it.
If you are a vet or tech, you are needed.

12275. Gonzales & Eric's Pits Update
by WillowLu, 9/18/05 13:21 ET
Just hung up with Eric. Things are on the move. They sponstaneously evac from YMCA to A/C truck stop. They're on route now.

His people have reached a breaking point, going for a couple of days but may or may not be able to take any more. DESPERATE FOR REINFORCEMENTS. ANY VOLUNTEERS CAN GET IN. ONLY REQUIRES A "CAN DO ATTITUDE." Something to be done at Gonzales for anyone who wants to help.

Specifically over the last 2 days they've instituted a new requirement for volunteer credentials issued by HSUS.

Go to 6 am meeting at Gonzales

Not much required.

Piece of paper issued 7 pm.

And you're off and rescuing.

If you need to a way to get there, there is now a program that will let you have a free rental car (and a tank of gas) as long as you drop it off in Baton Rouge withing 48 hours. You have to find another way back, as they want to keep the cars in the area.

Eric, Good to hear your voice this morning. I can't believe how surprising sane you sound considering the strain.

I hear that your crew has about 20 hours of rescue video. Suggestion: Please forward raw footage Anderson Cooper (do you still have his contact info from the interview?) and anyone else you can. CNN editors could then pour over it and edit.

Can you also post video excerpts to your blog for download? Would be most effective for circulating to the press.

People love reality TV, right? You can give them a monster dose.
